Vertical Systems Group’s 2018 U.S. Fiber Lit Buildings list is here! What changes happened in the past year!
For the third consecutive year in a row AT&T has held on to the top spot of Vertical Systems Group’s 2018 U.S. Fiber Lit Buildings list. Nine carriers had 10,000 or more U.S. fiber lit commercial buildings with Verizon taking second place. Vertical Systems Group defines a fiber-lit building as “a commercial site or data center that has on-net optical fiber connectivity to a network provider’s infrastructure, plus active service termination equipment onsite.”
Vertical Systems Group puts companies in three tiers. The top tier consists in order of AT&T, Verizon, Spectrum Enterprise, CenturyLink, Comcast, Cox, Crown Castle Fiber, Frontier, Zayo, Altice USA, and Windstream. The next tier is called the “Challenger” tier. The “Challenger” tier fiber providers have: 2,000-9,999 Fiber lit buildings. The “Challenger” tier consists of Fiber providers: Atlantic Broadband, Cincinnati Bell, Cleareon, Cogent, Consolidated Communications, FiberLight, FirstLight, GTT, IFN, Logix Fiber Networks, Segra, Unite Private Networks, and Uniti Fiber. The last tier is called the “Market Players” and these fiber providers have fewer than 2,000 fiber lit buildings. The tiers saw some movement in the rankings with Windstream going from the “Challenger” tier to the top tier! In addition, Frontier and Zayo switched their spots from the 2017 leaderboard. The last movement came from GTT and Atlantic Broadband who both moved into the “Challenger” tier.
Rosemary Cochran, principal of Vertical Systems Group talked about the finding from the rankings. “Following a flurry of mergers and acquisitions, fiber providers focused on new buildouts in 2018 to meet customer demand for higher speed dedicated access to business services and to support 5G pilots. Our research shows that while the majority of large and medium-size commercial buildings in the U.S. are fiber lit with one or more providers, relatively few small multi-tenant buildings are fiber connected. Cable MSOs and regional network operators have been most actively targeting fiber investment opportunities in this underserved segment.”
